The Accomodations Process
The Student Resource Center provides reasonable accommodations to qualified students with disabilities, as necessary, to ensure equality of access to the courses, programs, services and facilities of the University. However, students with disabilities are still required to adhere to all University policies including policies concerning conduct and performance.
Accommodations are put in place to provide a student equal access/equal opportunity. Accommodations cannot lower expectations, or requirements, and do not include fundamental alterations of a class or program.
The accommodations process is an interactive process that is initiated by the student. When initiated, the student will engage in an interactive conversation with the accommodations specialist to explore what access barriers they encounter in the university environment and what kinds of accommodations can be put in place to remove or mitigate those barriers.
Accommodations are determined based on all the information provided to the SRC. This includes the student's self-report and supporting documentation.
Accommodations may require adjustments and customization to suit the specific environment, course, or situation. This process is dynamic and can be initiated or revisited at any time. Should a student determine that an accommodation is insufficient to ensure equal access, they may reinitiate the process to explore alternative solutions.
This process can involve others, including the student, accommodation specialist, faculty and other staff. Parents, family members, medical providers and others can be involved if consent is given by the student. Ultimately, the student is still the one who initiates and drives the accommodation process.
Initial Process of Requesting Accommodations
- The student contacts the SRC and schedules an appointment with the accommodation specialist. Appointments can be in-person, over the phone or virtually.
- The student meets with the accommodation specialist to discuss the student’s disability and disability-related barriers the student encounters or anticipates facing.
- The student and accommodation specialist will discuss what accommodations are possible to provide the student with equal access.
- The specialist will request any documentation this is needed to support the accommodations. SRC staff will provide students with a Welcome Packet and assist students in identifying what documentation is needed and how to obtain it.
- Depending on the situation and request, the Accommodation Specialist will contact faculty to discuss the accommodation needed.
- Once accommodations are approved, the SRC staff will input the accommodations into computer database, "Clockwork."
- Students have complete control over whether their accommodations are put in place for a given class. Consequently, for each course they are taking, it is up to the student to decide which, if any, of their accommodations they will need to use in the course.
- Students will log into “Clockwork” to generate their accommodation letters at the beginning of each semester. The student does not have to write anything: the letter is already written for them.
- Accommodation letters are sent via email to the assigned faculty for each class, with a copy to both the student and their Accommodations Specialist. The purpose of the letter is to notify faculty that the student has accommodations available that they may decide to use.
- Faculty members are responsible for assisting in the provision of accommodations as described in the accommodation letter.
- Any concerns or questions related to accommodation, students, faculty or staff need to contact the SRC as soon as possible.
Important:
Students should be aware that an academic adjustment does not apply retroactively, so that grades earned on exams, assignments, or other classroom activities before the adjustment takes effect will not be changed.
Students are encouraged to pre-register with the Student Resource Center before classes begin so that accommodations can be in place when needed at the start of the semester. If pre-registration is not possible, students should register at the start of the semester or as soon as the need for an accommodation becomes known, and Student Resource Center will make good faith efforts to accommodate the student's needs as soon as possible. Requests received right at or after the start of a semester may result in the student being without the accommodation for part of the semester.
Students who are performing work (i.e. practicums) in professional and/or clinical settings are entitled to reasonable accommodations, as necessary, to perform the essential duties of the site. If students require accommodations at a site, students should notify their course instructor and SRC. SRC and the faculty members will assist the student in engaging in the interactive process with the site.
Renewing Academic Accommodation
Students requesting to use their accommodations for future semesters will need to review their accommodation plan each semester.
Student does not need to change any of their accommodations:
- Student will complete a Returning Student Accommodation Request Form and bring Concise Student Schedule.
- SRC staff will review the request and add students to the returning student list.
